Midsize Truck Shootout: Toyota Tacoma comes out on top!

ONTARIO, Calif. ? They're practical and fun, and would seem right for the times. But somehow, midsize pickups just aren't taken seriously. Their sales are just 20% of full-size models', according to sales tracker Autodata. Roughly 300,000 were sold last year, vs. 1.5 million full-size trucks To figure out why they are still around, and which is best, Cars.com's PickupTrucks.com website and USA TODAY tested seven models for the Midsize Pickup Truck Shootout. The smallest pickups really have grown into midsize machines, though sometimes they still are called compacts. Seven trucks were tested, quite a few for a segment so small and a reason it's hard to make money selling midsize pickups, having to split a modest market so many ways.

All trucks were 2012s, except for the 2011 Ranger. Ford killed it after the 2011 model, but it was in production at the time of the Shootout, so it was included. The judges were USA TODAY's Chris Woodyard; PickupTrucks.com editor Mark Williams; Dan Sanchez, author and editor of a number of truck publications; and Trevor Reed, editor of Work Truck Review and freelancer.

Their collective view: Toyota Tacoma was the clear winner. (Click Here for Full Article)

Ford/Toyota Collaboration

Thank you, Mr. Kuzak. We have just signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration with Ford. Both companies will now begin making preparations for joint work on new technologies. We are counting on those technologies to benefit customers in the United States and around the world.

It has been more than hundred years since the first car was born, and our industry is now facing several challenges. Offering safe cars is a given for any automaker, but one can say the greatest challenges are "conserving energy" and "reducing greenhouse gas."

Toyota achieved a breakthrough in these challenges in nineteen ninety-seven (1997). That is when we launched the first-generation Prius as the world's first mass-production gasoline-electric hybrid.

Since then, we have begun producing hybrid vehicles in the United States, China, Europe, Australia, and Thailand, as well as in Japan. We have sold about three-point-three (3.3) million hybrid vehicles in about eighty (80) nations.

Our collaboration with Ford is a move to make hybrid technology more widely available in sport-utility vehicles and in trucks. Those kinds of models are indispensable to American customers. And providing them with our hybrid technology will help conserve energy and reduce output of greenhouse gas here in the United States. That was our thinking in considering the collaboration. Toyota RAV4 EV Coming to Market in 2012

Recent reports have incorrectly stated that the 2012 RAV4 EV will only be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs.  We'd like to set the record straight.  The 2012 RAV4 EV will definitely be sold to the general public.  We anticipate robust public interest in the RAV4 EV and are keen to inform consumers that their future vehicle options include a battery electric Toyota.

Toyota is the only manufacturer bringing two battery electric vehicles to the market in 2012 - the RAV4 EV and the Scion iQ EV.  While the RAV4 EV will be available to the public, the Scion iQ EV will be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs only.

Multiple reports have been corrected on various automotive blog sites.  Please direct additional questions to Jana Hartline, jana_hartline@toyota.com
